Although injury prevention is a domain for athletic trainers (ATs), implementation science is a burgeoning area and many ATs may not have had specific education on preventive training program (PTP) implementation. This course aims to describe the most recent evidence on the benefits PTPs have on athlete injury risk, injury rate and sport performance. Additionally, ATs may not have the time to run PTPs every single day in their clinical setting. Coaches, particularly at the high school level do not utilize PTPs. ATs can train coaches to effectively implement PTPs with their athletes, however ATs may not have background on the most effective strategies to train coaches. This course will present a framework that ATs can use to begin the PTP implementation process within their own settings.
The specific objectives for this course include the development of the participant’s ability to:
- Discuss the current state of evidence for preventive training programs (PTPs)
- Describe the 7-steps for successful PTP design and development
- Prepare strategies for PTP implementation in different sport-specific or setting-specific scenarios, including but not limited to, youth sport, girls’ basketball, and the military.
According to the education levels described by the PDC, this continuing education course is considered to be Essential Level, and is appropriate for all athletic trainers.

Lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are the most common injuries associated with physical activity and athletic participation. Up to 70% of individuals who sustain a single LAS will eventually develop chronic ankle instability (CAI), which has been associated with long-term consequences such as decreased health-related quality of life and decreased physical activity. To help mitigate consequences related to CAI, recent studies have investigated different approaches in managing patients who suffer a LAS, including the use of patient-reported outcome measures, clinician-reported outcome measures, and various treatment approaches. Although LAS present a major challenge for health care providers, particularly athletic trainers, little is known about the overall effectiveness of current treatment strategies for LAS. Thus, there is a pressing need to identify effective treatment strategies that will optimize patient outcomes and reduce re-injury risk.
While treatments should be individualized, balance training has been shown to be an effective strategy to improve postural control and reduce recurrent LAS risk, and should be a part of every LAS rehabilitation protocol. ATs should use a combination of patient-reported outcome measures and clinician-rated outcome measures to guide the treatment and management of LAS and to improve patient outcomes, reduce the risk of LAS re-injury, and prevent the onset of CAI.
The specific objectives for this course include the development of the participant’s ability to:
- Discuss the progression of an acute lateral ankle sprain to chronic ankle instability
- Describe the evidence regarding the treatment of lateral ankle sprain injuries
- Identify patient-reported outcome measures and clinician-rated outcome measures appropriate for lateral ankle sprain rehabilitation
According to the education levels described by the PDC, this continuing education course is considered to be Advanced Level, and is appropriate for all athletic trainers.

Course Description:
The cluster of severe pneumonia cases caused by a novel coronavirus first reported in Wuhan, China in December of 2019 has now circled the globe. To date, millions of cases have been reported and the number of cases in the USA as well as worldwide is increasing at an alarming rate. The cause of these infections was shortly identified as a novel of coronavirus similar to the SARS coronavirus that emerged in 2003. Although similar to SARS this new virus has been identified as a novel, never reported virus now called SARS-CoV-2. This virus causes severe acute respiratory syndrome in some patients and this disease has been named COVID-19 (coronavirus disease-2019). Unfortunately, this virus is capable of very efficient person-to-person transmission and was declared a pandemic by March of 2020. The alarming spread of this infection in the USA has had a dramatic adverse impact on dental practice. This program will provide dental providers with the latest information on the epidemiology, testing, treatment, and management of COVID-19. The latest COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination strategies will be discussed. Additionally, this program will provide dental providers with the latest information on the management of COVID-19 in the dental office. Paramount to controlling this pandemic are the principles of respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette and enhancements in respiratory protection that may need to be implemented. Emphasis will be placed on compliance issues and how a practical, cost-effective “safe workplace” can be achieved.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the routes of transmission of infectious diseases and how to break the chain of infection.
- Know the updated recommendations for Standard Precautions.
- Learn the principles of respiratory etiquette to reduce the impact of respiratory diseases.
- Understand how COVID-19 is transmitted.
- Know the signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
- Understand the latest information on the transmission, testing, and management of COVID-19.
- Discuss COVID-19 vaccination.

Simplifying Adhesive Dentistry
Date & Time: Friday, July 22, 2022 – 11 AM (EST) , 10 AM (CST) , 8 AM (PST)
Location: Zoom Webinar
Audience: The Dental Professional
Format: Lecture
CE Credit: 1.5
Tuition: $59
Course Description:
Adhesive Dentistry has completely modified the treatment planning and procedural steps of modern dentistry. The use of adhesive systems and polymeric materials, such as resin composites, and the association with ceramics have allowed clinicians to preserve more sound dental structures during restorative procedures, reaching outstanding esthetic results with good mechanical strength and longevity. However, the high technique sensitivity of such procedures can lead to problems such as the presence of marginal gaps, color alteration, marginal staining, reduced mechanical strength, de-bonding, reduced longevity, post-op sensitivity, and others. The proper use of technique and indication of the materials is essential for a successful restorative procedure. The aim of this course is to provide evidence-based information to the clinician, explaining how to apply complex concepts to clinical practice, in a simple way.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the different types of adhesive techniques and most recent dental materials (adhesive systems, resin composites, resin cements, and ceramics).
- Select the appropriate restorative system (ceramic/metal/composite, adhesive system, resin cement) for each substrate and clinical situation.
- Identify the problems and limitations of current adhesive techniques and materials.
- Use guidelines to minimize errors and increase the longevity of adhesive restorations.

Course Description:
Connections Between System and Periodontal Disease: There is emerging evidence to support the existence of a two-way relationship between some systemic diseases and periodontitis, with systemic inflammation increasing the risk for periodontitis, and periodontal inflammation negatively affecting systemic health. Understanding of this relationship and incorporating strategies for chairside screening and making appropriate referrals and management of these patients will help dental care providers to better address patients’ oral and overall health and will also strengthen the role of a dental hygienist as an integral component of interdisciplinary healthcare.
Overview of the New Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions: A new periodontal classification system emerged from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. This new classification system will allow dental hygienists and dentists to individualize periodontal care for the patients and address multidimensional factors to provide comprehensive therapy and improve oral health outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- The circular relationship between systemic diseases and periodontal disease: Explain the underlying mechanism linking systemic diseases and periodontitis.
- Dental management, screening, and educating patients with systemic and periodontal diseases: Describe how dentists and hygienists can incorporate strategies to screen and identify patients with undiagnosed diabetes and make the necessary referral and educate them on the oral-systemic link to present dental care in the framework of overall health.
- The 2018 Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions: Overview of the new periodontal classification with a focus on the case-based review of the multidimensional staging and grading system for the periodontitis diagnosis.

Red, White and Ulcerative Lesions: When Bad Things Happen to Good Oral Mucosa
Date & Time: Saturday, August 27, 2022 – 11 AM (EST) , 10 AM (CST) , 8 AM (PST)
Location: Zoom Webinar
Audience: The Dental Professional
Format: Lecture
CE Credit: 2.0
Tuition: $69
Course Description:
Pathology of the oral mucosa entails a vast array of diseases that often confuse even the most experienced clinician. This course aims to use a “basic lesion” classification of oral mucosal pathology to help navigate and prioritize the diagnosis and management of the patient.
Part 1: Red and White Lesions of the Oral Mucosa
“Redness” and ‘whiteness” are mainstays of clinical oral pathology. Utilizing these two parameters, separately and in combination, we will go through actual patient cases, ranging from the commonly encountered to the rare and/or complicated ones, and discuss how to reach realistic, concrete decisions for the patient’s oral health care in clinical real-time. Emphasis will be given on how to select appropriate diagnostic methodology and how to initiate and handle interdisciplinary communications where applicable for the patient’s condition. An update on treatment will be provided where it is useful to the dental practitioner.
Part 2: Ulcerative Oral Conditions
Oral ulcers or “sores “are among the most frequently encountered chief complaints in dental practice. Using the characteristics of an ulcer (appearance, chronicity, pain, location, and a number of lesions) this part of the course prepares the clinician to systematically develop diagnostic assessment and treatment planning for a broad range of oral ulcerative conditions. Using clinical cases encountered in the largest oral medicine referral center in Michigan, we will present diagnostic decision trees and discuss which additional tests including tissue biopsy are necessary to arrive at a final diagnosis. Finally, we will provide therapeutic guidelines for common oral ulcerative conditions.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Document the clinical characteristics of common oral lesions accurately
- Use lesional characteristics to form and prioritize a differential diagnosis list
- Decide which diagnostic methodology(ies) is/are applicable and at what sequence they should be implemented
- Decide on patient referral and initiate communication with other clinicians
- Be familiar with and/or implement treatment based on an accurate diagnosis of oral lesions

Location: Zoom Webinar
Audience: The Dental Professional
Format: Lecture
CE Credit: 2.0
Tuition: $69
Course Description:
Dentists are now an integral part of the multidisciplinary team responsible for treating sleep breathing disorders, particularly due to the growing contribution of mandibular advancement devices (MADs) to the treatment of adult patients. MADs are anchored to the teeth to force the mandible into an advanced position, mechanically widening the upper airways and reducing their collapsibility. However, the stretching of muscles and ligaments of the jaws generates stresses, which are transmitted back to the teeth, periodontium and temporomandibular joints. Understanding and managing the side effects associated with MADs seem absolutely necessary for patient support, helping to reduce short-term adherence failures. As joint adaptations and occlusal changes gradually take place, following continuous wear of MADS, long-term support and monitoring is also necessary.
This interactive Webinar will test your knowledge about MAD therapy, as well as your differential diagnosis and therapeutic approach for their related side effects. It will be organized around clinical cases with very different profiles, as well as different designs of oral appliances.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Review the mechanisms of action of MADs in the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing, their indications, contraindications, and the limits of their use.
- Learn to manage short-term side effects to improve treatment adherence
- Understand long-term dentofacial side effects, their risk factors, and some biomechanical aspects of MADs design.

Course Description:
We are winning the battle against cancer, which means that more people are living longer . . . and will need the help of their dentist! With increasing frequency, every dental practice will see patients undergoing cancer treatment who are at risk of the side effects and sequelae of their care. In 2018, The Ohio State University College of Dentistry launched the Dental Oncology Clinic, geared to providing comprehensive care for cancer patients. The goal is to minimize the risks of dental care for patients undergoing cancer treatment, provide information and education for patients, their families, and healthcare providers, and enhance the quality of life for cancer patients. This course presents a compilation of the experience gained by that clinic, which will provide tools that the attendee can use immediately in the care of their patients. The attendees will receive materials that can become a reference manual for the practice in the assessment and treatment of oncology patients.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the nature of dental oncology patients, including those undergoing radiation therapy, anti-resorptive therapy, and immunosuppressive therapy.
- Have an appreciation for the value of proper consultation with other members of the cancer treatment team. Cancer-specific guidelines will be presented for effective consultation with our medical colleagues.
- Understand osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), including the dental implications of both conditions.
- Develop a rationale for comprehensive case assessment and treatment planning for restorative dental care of the oncology patient. Post-treatment supportive strategies will also be discussed.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE GAP
A significant gap exists between physician practice, science and clinical practice guidelines. (1) Evidence has shown that PCPs often lack the up-to-date skills, the time to keep up-to-date and the ability and strategies to address patients seen with chronic conditions within their practice. People are increasingly living for longer with multimorbidity. (2)With 47% presenting with multiple disease states, conditions can be difficult to diagnose, treat and the practioner is faced with patients who are non-compliant. Strategies and updated guidelines presented in this CME/CE program will provide new interventions and treatment options to help physicians cope with difficult to manage cases
EDUCATIONAL NEED
Primary Care providers provide most of the evidence-based disease prevention and screening within the current healthcare system. There remains a gap between the recommended preventive services and actual practice as well as patient adherence to prescribed treatment. Currently, most chronic illness care takes place in primary care practices which provides some disadvantages and serious limitations. This trend puts greater demands on the primary care professional address the frontline needs of these patients who present with multiple chronic conditions. Additionally people are increasingly living for longer with multimorbidity.
Of the 133 million patients with chronic diseases, 47% have more than one diagnosis. On average, PCP’s manage 3.05 problems per visit and the number of problems grown to 3.88 for people over the age of 65. A PCP handles multiple diseases and complications within in a single office visit.
This CME activity will provide an update about standards of care in order to reflect the most current evidence based knowledge and guidelines to improve competence.
DESIRED OUTCOME
This course is designed to provide interactive educational activities that discuss complicated case scenarios that have been shown to improve participant application of evidence-based medicine for patients with multiple chronic comorbidities. By providing a format for adult learning that includes lectures, case-based studies, interactive question and answer sessions and collaborative sharing of patient care issues has been shown to improve participate knowledge and competency
