Course Description

This intensive course will provide you with comprehensive, up-to-date, evidence-based therapeutic concepts that you will be able to implement into your daily practice.  This course was designed to help primary care and family physicians with up to date information to treat an extensive range of conditions as well as patients with multiple conditions and comorbidities.   Primary care providers will be able to apply the most current treatment strategies provided in recent clinical guideline updates, recognize the most effective interventions leading to reduction in modifiable risk factors, and employ practice relevant new research in their everyday patient encounters.

Course Topics

Based on your responses to our recent ATSU CME Needs Assessment Survey, experts will be presenting the latest up-to-date information on these topics:

  • Osteopathic Manipulative Techniques
  • Neurological Disorders
  • Updates in Oncology
  • Ophthalmology – Herpes of the Eye and Red Eye Systemic Disease
  • Interactions Between the Hospitalist and the Primary Care Provider
  • Vascular Disease and Carotid Artery Disease

Educational Objectives

  • Identify current therapeutic options for many medical disorders commonly seen in practice.
  • Improve adherence to evidence-based clinical guidelines in practice
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with the patient to ensure that diagnosis and treatment recommendations are understood
  • Summarize recent advances in office-based internal medicine based on case discussions

Target Audience

The target audience includes general internists, internal medicine subspecialists, family medicine physicians, and other primary healthcare providers which are interested in refreshing their knowledge in internal medicine

Educational Need

Chronic Disease is the leading cause of death in this country according to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.  45% of the total U.S. population live with a chronic condition and see a primary care physician for all of their care (Medical Economics from the CDC). Up to date review of clinical guidelines is necessary to present practicing physicians with the level of knowledge and understanding they need to improve patient care.  Most patients who see family medical practitioners have more than one co-morbidity and chronic disease.

Professional Practice Gap

The practicing physician is faced with mastering an ever increasing amount of knowledge to effectively care for patients. These clinicians must keep abreast of the most up to date evidence for a large number of disease states, and in particular, struggle with controversial internal medicine issues. These controversies are frequently the result of trying to reconcile the evidence of disease process outcomes versus patient care outcomes. This is compounded by the difficulty interpreting information presented by industry, which frequently overstates the disease process outcome when the patient care outcome does not support that evidence.

Desired Outcomes

This course is designed to improve the clinical competence of the participating clinician by providing a format for adult learning that includes lectures, case-based studies, interactive question and answer sessions and collaborative sharing of patient care issues.

Accreditation Statement

A.T. Still University (ATSU) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians.

ATSU designates this program for a maximum of 14 of AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.


Evidence-Based Content: It is the policy of the ATSU to ensure that the content contained in this CME activity is valid, fair, balanced, scientifically rigorous, and free of commercial bias.

Reviewers, working with the program directors will document the mechanism(s) for management and resolution of the conflict of interest and final approval of the activity will be documented prior to implementation. Any of the mechanisms below can/will be used to resolve conflict of interest:

  • Peer review for valid, evidence-based content of all materials associated with an educational activity by the course/program director
  • Limit content to evidence with no recommendations
  • Introduction of a debate format with an unbiased moderator (point-counterpoint)
  • Inclusion of moderated panel discussion
  • Publication of a parallel or rebuttal article for an article that is felt to be biased
  • Limit equipment representatives to providing logistics and operation support only in procedural demonstrations
  • Divestiture of the relationship by faculty-The reviewer should be a physician or other scientist with knowledge of the specialty area being reviewed and often times the Assistant Vice President of Continuing Education will perform this first review and can then appoint an independent reviewer.-The independent reviewer is not be involved in the planning of this CME Activity and cannot have a relationship with any corporate entity supporting the CME activity.-The reviewer should have a copy of this policy and a copy of the Standards for Commercial Support to fully grasp their responsibilities as the reviewer.Off-Label or Unapproved Use of Drugs or Devices
