Course Description:
This course will cover current evidence and evidence-based solutions regarding the main pillars of Minimally Invasive Dentistry: Prevention of carious lesions, minimal destruction of tooth structure, repair of defective restorations, and partial removal of caries tissue. We will also discuss evidence learned from ART (Atraumatic Restorative Technique) longitudinal studies. Concepts, materials and techniques presented can be readily implemented in the dental office.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explore treatment options for white spot lesions
- Understand the factors to consider when repairing or replacing defective restorations
- Understand, demystify, and learn from Atraumatic Restorative Treatment
- Understand different types of carious tissue removal strategies: total removal and partial removal (mechanical only, chemo-mechanical)
Meet the Speaker: Dr. Anuradha Prakki BDS, MSc., PhD
Dr. Anuradha Prakki graduated Dentistry from Campinas State University, Brazil (1996). She is a specialist in Restorative Dentistry from University of Sao Paulo (USP, 1999). She afterwards earned a Masters (2002) and PhD (2007) degrees in Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials from USP. During her PhD she spent one year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (US), School of Dentistry, working as a research scholar on the synthesis and characterization of developmental dental resins. Prakki joined the Faculty of Dentistry at The University of Toronto in the discipline of Restorative Dentistry, as an Assistant Professor in 2008, where she is currently an Associate Professor. In 2014, Prakki was a visiting research fellow at the Augusta University Dental School (USA). Through her research, Prakki investigates mechanisms of dentin degradation. She also develops stronger, longer-lasting restorative materials, and evaluates their performance and interaction with surrounding tissues. Prakki has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She is an active member of the International Association for Dental Research and the Academy of Dental Materials. Among teaching roles, Prakki acts as treatment plan coordinator and restorative clinical instructor at the University of Toronto clinics, and is the course director for Dental Anatomy and Occlusion, as well as Restorative Dentistry I Didactic and Restorative Dentistry I Pre-Clinical courses. Prakki has received important teaching awards including, The Dr. A. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award (2012-2013), The W. W. Wood Award (2017) for excellence in dental education, and the Dentsply Sirona Global Clinical Case Contest – national winner as a tutor (2018).
