Course Description:
The use of cannabis and cannabis-based products continue to rise in the United States and Canada. Unfortunately, research is often conflicting or unclear as to the benefits or harm of cannabis to the body or oral tissue. This lecture will provide a succinct overview of the forms of cannabis, how it is used and the health implications for the practicing dentist.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:
- Describe various types of cannabis, how they are consumed, current use patterns
- Describe how cannabis affects the body and potential physical and oral harm that may result
- Discuss the current research on the benefits and harms of medical marijuana and cannabis-based drugs.
- Identify strategies on how to incorporate patient-use assessments, educational materials, counseling strategies
Meet the Speaker:
Joan M. Davis, Ph.D.
Professor Joan M. Davis Ph.D., is a strong advocate for clinical decision-making to be based on evidence-based principles. To that end, she has developed clinical review and research curriculum for both dental hygiene and dental curriculum for more than 10 years. A champion for tobacco treatment in the dental setting, she developed and maintains the Tobacco Free: Tobacco Dependence Curriculum for Oral Health Educators website (https://tobaccofree.atsu.edu ) which offers a comprehensive tobacco treatment curriculum for dental care faculty worldwide. Recently, she was invited to write the section on Oral Health and Cannabis Use for the soon to be published 2020 Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health. Dr. Davis has presented and published nationally and internationally on interprofessional education, cannabis and oral health and tobacco treatment for professional healthcare educators. As a Fulbright Scholar Specialist, Dr. Davis collaborated with dental educators at the Turku University of Applied Sciences in Turku, Finland, Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Szeged in Szeged, Hungary, in 2016—where she focused on harmonizing curricular competencies and tobacco cessation. She currently is the Assistant Dean, Research at the A.T. Still University, Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health in St Louis, MO, USA
