 Course Description:

Communication is the art and science of making yourself heard.  Patients have always had questions, but the Covid era has heightened their search for information.  It is vital that the dentist and their team be able to provide not only accurate, evidence-based information but the proper perspective to digest the facts and choose a course of action. A conversation with a patient is not an intellectual exercise.  It is an opportunity to deliver specific messages to an interested audience. This course will examine the science of communication and the art of understanding.

 Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Better communicate through an understanding of the technical components and the emotional components of the delivery of information.
2. Learn to think from the patient’s perspective and gain greater control of the conversation to achieve strategic objectives.
3. Better respond to patient questions by learning the techniques to bridge from challenging questions to effective messages that assist the patient in achieving oral health.

Meet the Speaker: Matthew Messina, DDS

Matthew Messina, DDS, graduated first in his class from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1987.  After graduation, he completed a general practice residency at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. A practicing general dentist for 30 years, he has also served as a visiting faculty member at the Pankey Institute for advanced dental education in Key Biscayne, Florida. Dr. Messina is the Clinic Director of Ohio State Upper Arlington Dentistry and is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry.  He had served as the Interim Director of the Dental Oncology Clinic of the James Cancer Center at OSU since 2018.

Dr. Messina is recognized nationally for his presentations on communications, as well as his lectures on leadership skills that allow dentists to provide optimal care for their patients. He is currently a consumer advisor for the American Dental Association, serving as a national spokesperson since 1995. Throughout his career, he has appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America program and NBC’s Today Show.  He has been interviewed on CNN and National Public Radio. He has also provided comments on dental health and related subjects for USA TODAY, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health, Web MD, and Prevention Magazine, to name just a few.

“The Art and Science of Endodontic Diagnosis”

 Course Description:

Successful management of the dental patient relies on accurately identifying and managing odontogenic pain and/or pathology. Diagnosis is the first step on the road to success. Although the main diagnostic tools available to us remain unchanged for years, if performed sequentially and correctly, a fairly reliable assessment of whether and where an endodontic intervention is necessary can be obtained.

This seminar will review how to acquire a comprehensive history from the patient and methodically and systematically conduct clinical and radiographic tests in order to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. The physiology of pulpal and periradicular pathosis will be detailed, which will aid in interpreting the chief complaint of the patient and the results of the various objective clinical tests. Lastly, we will review pathologies mimicking endodontic pathosis and odontogenic infection and discuss the applications of CBCT imaging in differential and definite diagnosis and its limitations.

 Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the science behind the pathophysiology of pulpal and periapical disease.
2. List the steps that help in achieving an accurate endodontic diagnosis
3. Ask the patient objective questions to help in the diagnostic process.
4. Describe sequentially and apply in a systematic way the objective tests available to us in clinic to arrive to a definitive diagnosis.
5. Identify oral lesions and dental anomalies that may mimic odontogenic infections.
6. Identify the valuable information that CBCT imaging modality can provide in endodontic diagnosis.

 Meet the Speaker: Georgia Nikoloudaki, DDS, MSc, FRCD(C)

Dr. Georgia Nikoloudaki is a full-time assistant professor and Chair of the division of Endodontics at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University. Dr. Nikoloudaki obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master’s Degrees in Dentistry with a specialization in Endodontics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece. She then pursued her PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry at Western University where her research focused on wound healing mechanisms in the mouth. She is a board-certified Endodontist in Canada and Fellow of The Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and maintains part-time private practice limited to Endodontics at a dental specialty clinic in London, ON. Dr. Nikoloudaki has been heavily involved in teaching dental students at Schulich Dentistry since 2015. She strives to contribute to high-quality research in the field of dentistry and to continue building on the current didactic and clinical Endodontics for future dentists. As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Nikoloudaki aims to not only share knowledge with her students, but also generate new knowledge to provide the highest quality of care for her patients and the advancement of the field of Endodontics. She has numerous scientific publications in peer reviewed journals and is supervising dental students in research projects.

“Busting Biofilm: Classic to New Age Solutions”

 Course Description:

Biofilm management is a principal goal of preventive and nonsurgical periodontal therapy.  As part of maintaining optimal oral health, biofilm management requires daily patient self-care in combination with routine professional care for biofilm removal.  Traditional methods of subgingival biofilm management included hand and ultrasonic instrumentation, and supragingival biofilm removal focused on various polishing techniques.  More recent innovations have focused on subgingival air polishing for the removal of biofilm from root surfaces with a glycine-based powder.  As oral health care professionals we must also stay up to date with biofilm removal products that best meet each patient’s needs.

 Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the traditional methods of professional biofilm removal: hand and/or ultrasonic instrumentation, power polishing, and air polishing
2. Explain the importance of professional subgingival biofilm removal from root surfaces as a routine part of nonsurgical periodontal therapy
3. Compare and contrast conventional supragingival air polishing with subgingival air polishing
4. Explain the benefits to a patient when supra- and subgingival biofilm removal is incorporated into the treatment plan
5. Identify and recommend self-care devices for daily biofilm removal

 Meet the Speaker: Jennifer B. Harmon, RDH, MS

Jennifer Harmon is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Comprehensive Oral Health at the Adams School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she has taught for six years.  As a triple Tar Heel, she has received her Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science, Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, and Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education.  She teaches both dental hygiene and dental students, and currently serves as clinic director for first-year dental hygiene students and directs several courses including dental anatomy and clinical theory. Harmon serves on the advisory board for the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research & Practice and served as the President of the North Carolina Dental Hygienists’ Association.  She is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, American Dental Education Association, and Sigma Phi Alpha.  In addition to these leadership roles, she is a strong advocate for oral health and overall wellness and enjoys speaking nationally for Dental Hygiene Academy.

“Diagnostic Tests in Periodontics: Concepts and Applications”

 Course Description:

Over the years, knowledge on periodontal microbiology and immunology enabled the identification of bacteria/molecules that could serve as markers of risk of disease activity and periodontal breakdown. These advances, coupled with the constant progress of biotechnology tools now enable clinicians to monitor some of these markers to promote a chairside surveillance of periodontal health and anticipate periodontal breakdown in treated patients. This course aims at presenting a review of periodontal disease progression concepts and the rationale behind some of the markers and biological fluids used in periodontal diagnostic tests. Additionally, basic principles of the biotechnological tools used to detect and quantify these markers are to be presented, along with their relative advantages, limitations, and potential pitfalls.

 Learning Objectives:

1. Describe basic mechanisms of destruction of the periodontium
2. Understand the peculiarities of periodontal disease progression and candidate markers of this process.
3. Understand the biotechnological approaches used to detect markers of disease and bacteria.

 Meet the Speaker: Eraldo L. Batista Jr. DDS, MSc (Perio), DSC (Oral Biology), FRCD (C)

Dr. Eraldo Batista received his D.D.S. from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (PUCRS) in 1988 followed by a master’s degree in Periodontology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Soon after he started teaching Periodontics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), also working with Periodontics and Implantology in private practice. In 2000 enrolled in the DSc. Program in Oral Biology at Boston University, graduating in 2005. Back in Brazil, he taught at the Dental School also collaborating with the Medical School and the Graduate Program in Cellular & Molecular Biology at PUCRS.  Moved to Canada in 2013, assuming the position of Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in 2018. Joined the Department of Clinical Dental Sciences-Division of Periodontics at Dalhousie University as Associate Professor in 2020, focusing on teaching and research. Fellow and Speaker of the International Team for Implantology (ITI), Section Canada.

“Surgical Microscope Enhancing Periodontal and Implant Treatment Outcomes”

 Course Description:

Using the surgical microscope for improving periodontal and implant-related regenerative outcomes is happening.  Increased magnification (10 to 25x) and confocal illumination make possible precise incision, soft tissue reflection and management, complete surface detoxification and detailed suturing.  These delicate procedures can lead to improved wound stability and early revascularization, which may improve regenerative outcomes and reduce postoperative morbidity.  This course will focus on the principles and rationale of using the surgical microscope for periodontal and guided bone regeneration, supplemented by case demonstrations.

 Meet the Speaker: Hsun-Liang Chan, DDS, MS, Clinical Associate Professor of Dentistry

Dr. Chan finished periodontal specialty training with a prestigious award,

Sigurd P. Ramfjord Award for Excellence in Graduate Periodontics, at the University of Michigan in 2011. Since graduation, he has been teaching as a full-time clinical faculty at the University of Michigan. He teaches topics related to periodontal disease and implant therapy to predoctoral students and graduate periodontal residents in the clinics and in the classroom. He also conducts clinical research focusing on minimally invasive periodontal and implant surgeries using advanced imaging, e.g. 3D dental ultrasound, CBCT scans, and digital treatment planning. He received several other awards from the nation’s authority in periodontics, the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), including Fellowship to the Institute for Teaching & Learning (2011), Abram and Sylvia Chasens Teaching and Research Fellowship (2011), Nevins Teaching and Clinical Research Fellowship, the AAP foundation (2013), Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics (2015) and AAP Sunstar Innovation Award (2018). He is also listed as a finalist of the Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship In Advanced Implant Surgery (2011). He serves as a committee member in different capacities in major periodontal and dental implant organizations, e.g. AAP, Academy of Osseointegration, Midwest Society of Periodontology and Michigan Periodontal Association, etc. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and conference abstracts/presentations related to periodontics and implant therapy. Dr. Chan is also the Director of the “Periodontal and Implant Microsurgery Academy (PiMA)” which offers three levels of courses with various time commitments and depth of training for interested individuals with all ranges of experience with microsurgery.
